What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese relaxation and healing technique that uses light touch to calm the nervous system, promote restorative sleep and provide support during illness, injury recovery and life transition periods. By balancing and replenishing a person’s natural flow of energy, Reiki shifts the body and mind into a parasympathetic state of calm vitality, increasing the body’s self-healing ability.
Reiki in Practice
Reiki is now used in over 800 hospitals around the country—including Duke and the Mayo Clinic—as a complementary therapy that increases patients’ overall health and wellness. Reiki is safe for people of all ages, is non-invasive and can be integrated with all conventional medical treatments.

Frequently asked questions
-
As with many integrative wellness practitioners, I’m unable to accept insurance at this time.
-
Reiki is performed by trained practitioners on clients who are fully clothed, either by placing their hands lightly touching or hovering slightly over the body. There is no manipulation of tissues like with massage techniques.
-
Reiki is not a religion, nor is the practice affiliated with any religious text or belief system. It is practiced by, and used to benefit, people from all faith traditions and atheists alike. Reiki works to balance and restore the biosphere (living energy field) of a person or animal regardless of any spiritual beliefs. All you need to do to enjoy the benefits of Reiki is simply show up however you are and receive.
-
Reiki is performed with a client fully clothed, so anything you feel comfortable resting in is fine. Natural fibers that aren’t constrictive are ideal, however natural fiber clothing isn’t necessary. Any wearable technology can be removed before the session.

Reiki session experiences vary widely. Sensations can include warmth, light tingling, coolness or nothing during the actual session, although effects may be felt later. Most people shift into a parasympathetic “rest and digest” state of relaxation during a session where alpha and theta brainwaves are activated. Stress hormones decrease. Blood pressure lowers. Deep relaxation and peace is possible.
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice and should never replace professional medical care, diagnosis or advice. Always continue with prescribed treatments and consult your doctor for any medical concerns.
